Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implants

Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implants in Atlanta GA

Please be gentle with the surgical site. Avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting, or touching the surgical site on the day of surgery. There likely will be a metal healing abutment protruding through the gum tissue.  After the first week you ARE encouraged to gently brush the healing abutment.  If you use an electric toothbrush, please turn it off when brushing the healing abutment OR use a  soft bristled toothbrush.

Typically, patients experience minimal bleeding after dental implant surgery. However, some bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for 24 hours. Excessive bleeding is highly uncommon, if this should occur, please contact the office or Drs. Aiken or Shessel for further instructions.

Swelling is a normal occurrence after surgery. To minimize swelling, apply an ice pack on the cheek in the area of surgery. Apply ice as much as you can comfortably tolerate, for the first 24-48 hours. Swelling generally reaches a peak in 24-36 hours and then subsides over the next 3-5 days. If swelling begins to increase after the third post-operative day, please promptly contact the office for assitance.

Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid hot liquids or food. Soft food and liquids should be eaten on the day of surgery. Return to a normal diet as soon as possible unless otherwise directed.

You should begin taking pain medication before the local anesthetic wears off. Please refer to the written instructions in your discharge paperwork for all medication related instructions.

Be sure to take the prescribed antibiotics as directed to help prevent infection.

Good oral hygiene is essential to good healing. Warm saltwater rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) should be used at least 4–5 times a day, especially after meals. DO NOT rinse with peroxide, even if diluted. If you are given a prescription oral rinse, please rinse for 30 seconds and spit twice per day. Remember, brushing your teeth and the healing abutments is encouraged throughout the healing process. Be gentle initially (within the first 7 days) when brushing around the surgical areas, but please be sure to brush your healing abutments throughout the healing process.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Keep physical activities to a minimum immediately following surgery. If you are exercising, throbbing or bleeding may occur. If this occurs, you should discontinue exercising. Keep in mind that you are probably not taking normal nourishment. This may weaken you and further limit your ability to exercise.

Unless they were delivered by your surgeon or dentist on the day of your surgery, partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures should not be used immediately after surgery. You may wear these prostheses as soon as it is comfortable (typically after 2-3 days).
