Post-Operative Instructions: I.V. Sedation

  1. Rest and Recovery: After IV sedation, it’s important to rest and allow the effects of the sedative to wear off.  You cannot drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 24-hours following your procedure.
  2. Monitoring: It is highly advisable to have someone stay with you for the first few hours after your procedure to monitor your condition, attend to any of your needs and to help ensure your safety.
  3. Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting and exercise, for at least 3-4 days following your procedure. Engage in light activities and gradually resume normal activities as tolerated.
  4. Diet and Hydration: Start with clear liquids like water, broth, or juice immediately after your procedure. Avoid hot liquids and alcohol until the effects of the sedation have completely worn off. Gradually progress to soft foods and then to your regular diet as tolerated. Ensure adequate hydration by drinking plenty of fluids.
  5. Warning Signs: Contact you’re the office immediately if you experience severe or worsening pain, excessive bleeding, difficulty breathing, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, fever, or any other concerning symptoms.
